Hong Kong Wildlife

We spotted this surprisingly large (dead!) porcupine in a river at the end of Wilson Trail Stage 5 in Oct 02.  Apparently porcupines are widespread in Hong Kong but rarely sighted.

This freshwater crab was seen on Wilson Stage 4

This bamboo snake had been run over on D'aguilar Peninsular (near Shek O on HK island)
Large spiders are very common - particularly on Lantau island - but there are no poisonous spiders in Hong Kong.
Buffalo wander freely on Lantau.

Monkeys can easily be seen near Shing Mun reservoir

This (dead) rat was seen on Lantau Island
These wild cows are very comfortable around all the hikers and campers at Cheung Sheung along MacElhose Trail, Stage 3
Well, OK - not very wild - these chickens were on a farm at the end of Kai Kung Leng
Gorgeous dragonfly on Lantau, photographed by Menno Ponsen.
What are those dragonflies doing?

Spotted at Ping Nam Stream, June, 2006

Got to have a good eye to spot this gecko.
Okay, not wildlife, but so pretty.
A lizard spotted near Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. Photographed by Jasmina Tekic.
A juvenile cobra (you can tell by the faint stripes) safely below us in a ditch on Lantau Island.
A banana flower and boy called Balarama

HKU's Ecology Department's newsletter has some other great pics (well OK - actually, better pics!) - Look at their 'Wild corner'
